Lily walked in first and it was quiet, too quiet so she drew her weapon and pushed Wendy back. The tiny home was loud and bustling with Adela’s siblings the last time the women visited. Sitting on the dingy couch dirty but looking healthier than she had before was Adela. There were no boys and no uncle to translate. Lily had to rely on her rudimentary Pashto and Adela’s mom’s broken English. Lily sat down on the couch with the little girl to get an understanding of what was going on. Wendy saw the soldier in her lover oozing from her pores as she kept her hand firmly on her weapon.
